Can you believe it’s June already?! I know right? Crazy!!! And that means it’s time for another installment of Feature Friday! YAY! 😀 June’s Feature Friday is all about Balance Yoga Studio located in downtown Dover Ohio. Make sure you read all the way down. Lindsay was gracious enough to include a coupon! Thank you Lindsay!
Tell me a little about yourself.
I was born and raised in Tuscarawas County, in the Dover/New Philadelphia area. I’m blessed with an amazing family which includes four sisters, as you can imagine it can be crazy at times, and also absolutely wonderful! I have an awesome 5 year old son who has taught me more about love and life than I ever would have imagined possible. I’m lucky to be very grounded and my family and friends have been a huge part of that. I’m very independent, always looking for opportunities to grow and take the approach of diving head first into things and figuring it all out as I go. In addition to the studio, I also work full time as an operations manager for a health care consulting company, this was my first real job out of college and I have been with the company for nine years. I love my full time gig and because of it I was able to embark on my journey in opening the first yoga studio in the area.
Would you please tell us a little about your business journey? Your first memory/aha moment to going down this particular path?
There was never an “aha” moment for me. I’m more the type of person that watches and participates in the organic growth of things. So for me it was a gradual progression and culmination of events, energies, passion and opportunity. I started doing yoga about a year and a half ago when I met my boyfriend who, at the time, was going through yoga teacher training himself. Shortly after doing my first yoga practice with him, I started doing my own at home practice and quickly realized I wanted to share the benefits of yoga with others. Teaching came very naturally to me and I started teaching my mom, sister and best friend and ultimately decided I wanted to become a certified yoga teacher and so I began yoga teacher training last fall. I didn’t want to teach yoga in a gym and knowing that there was a growing interest in yoga along with my passion to make it accessible to the community, I decided to open Balance Yoga Studio.
How long have you been in business? Where are you located?
Balance Yoga Studio opened on January 3rd, 2015; we are located in Dover at 123 West Third St, Suite 202. We are on the second floor of the Galleria of Salons, which used to be the JC Penney building.
What are some different classes you offer? Anything for the kids? Do you have any upcoming workshops or events?
We offer a variety of classes geared toward different fitness levels, the great thing about yoga is that everybody can do it and with our class offerings there is something out there for everyone! Gentle yoga classes which focus more on gentle movement to increase flexibility and mobility; beginner classes that focus on working through the foundational poses of the yoga practice; and classes such as our vinyasa flow and strong variations where we explore more challenging poses and move at a quicker pace, expect a challenge with these classes!
We have a couple of monthly events – a kids class on the last Saturday of the month at 12:30 for ages 5-8 and a monthly community beginner class which is a donation based with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit a local charity. We have recently added a bi-weekly class to the schedule, Restorative Reset, which takes place every other Tuesday at 7:30pm starting June 9th. This is a restorative yoga class paired with doTERRA essential oils – this class is all about relaxation as we move through gentle poses to release stress and tension while essential oils are applied with light massage. On Wednesday, June 10th at 7:30pm we are introducing BUTI yoga, a fusion of power yoga and tribal dance movements – an empowering flow for women and a high energy workout that is a ton of fun! We’ll pair this with wine on Friday June 19th for Girl’s Night Out Yoga! On Saturday July 18th from 6pm-8pm we will have a Prana Flow Yoga event with a wonderful teacher from DC who has extensive training in various styles of yoga as well as in a variety of ancient healing modalities. And we will also be hosting a yoga teacher training starting in August! There are so many wonderful things going on and so much more coming up, there are ongoing updates on the website as well as the Facebook page so everyone can stay connected!
Let’s say a person is on the fence and unsure if yoga is for them or where to start… what do you say to them? Any advice or encouragement?
Yoga is a personal experience; each person has their own reasons for starting a yoga practice and for continuing in a yoga practice. There needs to be a determination of what the person desires to get from their practice and researching the class offerings to determine the best fit. For some people it can be intimidating walking into a studio for the first time, assuming that everybody else in class will be doing each pose perfectly. To these people, I would recommend starting in a beginner class, where everyone is in the same boat. Teachers are there to guide the students in their yoga practice and there are no expectations of perfection. I always tell my students, “practice makes practice; practice does not make perfect.” Yoga brings about peace of mind and acceptance with who we are and where we are; setting the expectations aside and being in the experience when we journey into practice on our mats. It really comes down to just being present in the experience.
What business goal do you have for 2015? What would you like to have accomplished in the next 5 years?
Throughout the rest of the year, I will continue to add teachers and classes to the schedule and create workshops and events that are important to the students and the community. My team and I have been brainstorming ideas for workshops and events through the summer and I am lucky to have found a fantastic gal to help with marketing the events! I’m always looking for ways to take yoga into the community so I will continue that path as well. The studio was a sponsor for the Union Hospital Run for Home and we had an area set up for post run stretching, I will be teaching every other Wednesday at the Norma Johnson Center starting June 3rd and running through September, and you can also see us at the farmers market this summer on June 24th doing a yoga demo. I have some exciting ideas for the studio over the next five years, the yoga community and the arena of holistic health and wellness are growing and will continue to grow and Balance will be a large part of that growth initiative!
Can you tell me a little bit about your team/employees? What do they bring to the table?
One thing I learned from being an operations manager is to hire candidates that posses the qualities that can’t be taught. A lot of folks can go through yoga teacher training and learn how to teach yoga, but I wasn’t looking for teachers that simply knew how to teach. I wanted to bring teachers onto the Balance team to work alongside me in bringing yoga into the community with a shared sense of passion, adherence to the traditions of yoga and a sense of service to the community. In my studio – I put heart first and business second and my teachers share that spirit of loving kindness which is integral to the mission of the studio. In terms of formal training, the teachers have undergone training in Yoga Alliance certified yoga schools; they are all wonderful, coming from a variety of backgrounds and they bring a unique personal style to their teaching!
If you have 2 free hours to yourself, what do you do?
Now that the weather is finally warming up I enjoy spending time sitting out on my back patio; usually with a glass of wine and a book. I also like to take my yoga practice and meditation outside as well, it can be hard at times to get my own practice in so when I have the time, I take advantage of it!
Work related or not, what are some of your favorite-must-have-always-have with you things?
Lip balm, my journal and water! I’m a bit of junkie with the lip balm and have several on me at all times! I use my journal for everything – in those pages are my thoughts, notes from my yoga teacher training, ideas jotted down prior to opening the studio, and ideas for upcoming workshops/events/etc.
