Tuscarawas County Photographer | what to wear for Spring photos + Pinterest fun
As your photographer I understand that you have a lot of questions…
- What do we wear?
- What can I do with my prints after I have them?
- Am I supposed to stare at the camera and “say cheese” the entire time?
- How do I prepare my kids?
- Do you have any styling ideas for my wedding? What photographs well?
- What is a Fresh 48 session?
- Again, what do we wear?! <— I hear this often haha
Guess what? I am always hear to answer your questions and help in every way I can…. but to help make this easier on myself and you as well, I have some handy dandy Pinterest boards dedicated to YOU! 🙂 I also have many pins on all sorts of things… family, cooking/recipes, kid friendly crafts, DIY for the home, fitness (which even I should take my own advice on this one 😛 ), cleaning tips, essential oils, Disney vacation tips and lots of other random fun pins.
With Spring here (officially – we’re still waiting on the warm weather to stick though), I have been booking a lot of Spring outdoor sessions. The question of what to wear keeps popping up. So let’s keep that as the focus of this post. 🙂 Most of these tips carry well over into Summer too!I absolutely love photographing this time of year!! The colors, the sunshine and just plain getting OUT of the house after the long Winter always makes for a happy session.
Why book a Spring family session?
- Kids are usually so excited just to be outside that they are more relaxed about having their photo taken. Hint: This applies to Dad’s too. 😉
- In the Spring, people seem to be a little more desensitized to the chilly temps. The actual temp might still be on the frosty side, but add a little sunshine and everyone is just itching to ditch their jackets and coats.
- Um, helloooooooo pretty light!!!
- Kids who would decide they are freezing cold after 5 minutes in the Fall, will change their tune in the Spring. As mentioned before, they’ll be so giddy to be outside in the warmer temps that your session should go much more smoothly!
- COLOR! You can get away with adding fun poppy colors in your wardrobe!
- And with a bit of planning… flowers! Quite possibly my favorite part of Spring.
Let’s get back to what to wear for said Spring family session…
a few questions/answers…
We want to wear jeans and matching white polo shirts. Is this okay? Please no! Don’t be all matchy matchy! I feel like this dates your images and it seems very 90s to match this much. Wearing the same outfit on everyone doesn’t show off your personality at all and will probably result in you feeling uncomfortable and nobody wants that showing in their photos. What colors should we wear? This leads me back to Pinterest. There are so many amazing color combinations out there!! You can visit my boards and find something that will work best for your family and kids. The easiest way is to choose the most difficult person’s wardrobe first, and then move out from there. Will hubby only wear khaki’s? Start with him! And it’s okay, I have a husband like this too. I understand. 😉 😛 Don’t be afraid to wear bright colors. Seriously, Spring and Summer weather practically screams bright and colorful. Try choosing 3 coordinating colors and add in 1 you don’t normally wear but would like to try. That will be your accent color. Use it sparingly but have it there to add that extra pop. It’s really easy once you get started! Promise!! Try mixing bright fun colors with more neutral shades like charcoal and even denim. And don’t forget to have some of the colors be on the tops and bottoms of different family members. You don’t want everyone having a neutral on the bottom and a bright on the top or vice versa. And while we’re on the subject of bright and fun and colorful… I’m not talking about neons. Oh my. Please don’t get me started. Neon colors (especially when right against the face) will create harsh color casts on your skin. Not only will this not benefit you, it makes my post processing time a living nightmare. So just don’t. Please and thank you. 🙂 Another quick color tip… try to limit the amount of green you will wear. Spring has enough green coloring already that it sometimes ends up looking a bit silly if you are wearing a lot of it too. As an accent color it is beautiful though!
Psssstt!!! White is okay too! Just use it sparingly and keep things simple when you do.What about prints and patterns? They are wonderful!! … when used correctly. Let’s face it, some people are more fashion forward than others. Most of us aren’t. I fall into the latter category so I sympathize with you if you do too. The same rule applies to that some people look amazing in everything. Anddddd most of us don’t. 😛 It’s not fair. But it is what it is. Let’s dress our bodies to look their best! If you want to go for prints (yay! I do love a good one now and then), keep it simple still. Limit to only a few people in your family (or 1 or 2 depending on family size even). Vary the size of your prints. You don’t want everyone wearing large polka dots. 😉 And try keeping some of them under layers of other things (i.e. a plaid shirt on dad, under a jacket. AND a printed shirt on your little guy with a solid tee underneath.).What about weather? Yes Spring is gorgeous and super fun… but we all know that Ohio can be a little finicky at best. The ground may still be damp. That’s okay!! I come prepared for situations like this (i.e. packing trash bags and plastic to layer underneath pretty quilts and blankets for sitting shots or possibly a prop or 2 for your little one to sit on). Keep the weather in mind when doing the last minute planning for your session. Has it been rainy the past few days? Maybe those darling lacy white flats won’t be the best option for your little girl? Try opting for some fashionable rain boots instead!! Not only will they be functional, they’ll be sure to be a hit with your kids and will add some pizazz to your final images.
Just for fun… how about some old photos I dug up of my kids and maybe some what not to wear advice… 😉 LOL
